THE MIDDLE SCHOOL: GRADES 6, 7 & 8
The Middle School
In grades six, seven, and eight, your child will continue to develop independent thinking skills through challenging academics. Students will be inspired to make moral decisions and learn how to meet the challenges that face today’s adolescents. Your child will be introduced to an exciting academic program that includes three years of a language arts program emphasizing critical reading and writing skills. The Middle School math program rigorously prepares students for a high school with an advanced level algebra course that crowns the program in the 8th grade. American, European and ancient history come alive through a variety of media and models. An innovative lighthouse science program unique to Marymount focuses the students’ attention on an array of marine sciences. The community service program gives students the opportunity to reach out beyond the protective walls of Marymount into the community at large and, through our efforts to think more globally, to the needy in countries round the world.

An innovative program of more than twenty electives allows students to test their interests and stretch their intellectual limits through a smorgasbord of offerings. French culture, cooking, drama, videography, scuba diving, leadership, dance, the history of rock and roll, robotics, fitness for life, ceramics, and yearbook production, among other engaging courses give each child a chance to explore areas of special interest and curiosity.

The importance of developing each student as a spiritual entity continues in the Middle School with in-depth studies of the Old Testament and the New Testament, and a culminating course in comparative religions required of all 8th graders before graduation. Dances, Buddy Barbecues, color days, themed events, and exciting adventures in the Yucatan and Washington, D.C., all ensure that our Middle School students learn to interact collaboratively, relish challenges, and grasp opportunities with confidence, good judgment, and increasing maturity.

Adolescence is a time of rapid and extensive change. The Marymount faculty knows how to help your child channel the energies of the middle school years into positive learning and leadership activities. The result is that basic courses in English, mathematics, religion, science, history, and Spanish are enriched and elevated by electives, study skills classes, debate, advisory groups, leadership development, community service, off-campus trips, physical education and competitive interscholastic sports. Our small class size ensures your child’s opportunity to master a college preparatory curriculum. As a result, each Marymount Middle School student will reap the benefits of a highly rewarding partnership with his or her teachers and classmates. The knowledge, skills, and values encouraged by teachers with high expectations will prepare your child to reach his or her full potential.
